More Electrical Information

The following is a list of additional categories that we've chosen to discuss in further detail:

Important Note: The information we provide here is not intended to be used as a comprehensive guide for conducting any electrical repairs yourself, but rather, as a quick reference for individuals conducting research on a problem. Please note that we do not accept any liability for the work done by the service partners who advertise our websites, nor do we accept any liability for any attempts that our websites' visitors might make to conduct electrical repairs themselves. Because of the risks involved, you we strongly believe you should find a professional electrician

Circuit Breakers

Electricity has become a constant in our lives. It provides us innumberable benefits, but electricity also poses are strong danger, with most common danger being the threat of house fires. The more electrical information we can gather, the more we can prevent deadly accidents that result because of its use. Estimates gather that more that 39,000 residential fires are caused by the electrical systems every single year in the US. These causes include arc faults, short circuits, or overloading of electrical circuits. Understanding some of the basics about typical home electrical systems will aid in the education of the dangers of electrical problems. The electrical service enters the house and connects to a main electrical panel.

Main Fuse Panel

The central panel can either be a fuse box or circuit breaker box and houses the central shutoff for the entire system. It can provide much of the info needed to evaluate the wiring properly; including age, overall system capacity, and the number of branch circuits available in the building. From the main electrical panel, wires run in different directions throughout the house to power outlets, lights, air conditioners, ceiling fans, and various other direct-wired electrical appliances. These wire-runs are called branch circuits. All of the current runs through the central panel to the various branch circuits.

The central fuse panel contains fuses or circuit breakers which limit:

  • the capacity of the entire system...and
  • the amount of current which runs through the branch circuits.

Wires tend to overheat and increase fire hazards if they are carry too much current, because when electricity runs through a wire, the wire heats up because of its resistance to the flow of electrical current. Both the diameter of the wire (resistance increases as the wire diameter gets smaller) and how many electrical items on the circuit are drawing electricity (more items increase the electrical current) affect the amount of heat created in the wire. To stop the wire from getting too hot and starting a fire, the designer of the branch circuit wiring needs to do two things:

  • Attempts to size the wire large enough to handle the estimated electrical load on the circuit.
  • Attempts to contain the amount of electrical load on the branch circuit by limiting the number of potential electrical appliances that can be running at the same time on that circuit (i.e. places only so many outlets on one branch circuit or puts larger pieces of electrical equipment on circuits dedicated to that equipment only). a careful inspection of the central fuse panel is a very important part of evaluating the electrical wiring.

Fuse panels

One central fuse block can have five branch circuit fuses. The rating for this entire system is 60 amperes, because that is the rating for the fuses in the central fuse block. Sometimes this central fuse rating is stamped on the cover of the fuse panel or on the central fuse block itself.

Various branch circuits can have different size fuses, relying on the size of the wires and the use of the particular circuit. A circuit supplying only a few outlets and lights can have a 15 amp fuse; while a circuit for an electric range can have a 40 amp fuse block.

When the ratings of all of the branch circuits are totalled, the figure will be greater than the rating for the central fuse. This means that all of the branch circuits cannot be at their full capacity at the same time. Once the total current of all of the circuits combined reaches or exceeds the rating for the central fuse, the central fuse operates and shuts down the entire system.

Fuses

Fuses have the same functionality as a breaker, except for the fact that when a fuse blows, it must be replaced. Electrical fuse information is important knowledge to know when dealing with your electrical panels. There are different types of fuses, such as cartridge fuses and screw-in fuses. Cartridge fuses look a lot like a shotgun shell, and mount in a little rack that pulls in and out of the bracket.
