Electrical Outlet

Fixing a faulty outlet can be done with a minimum cost and worry. However, if you do not know how to do this, feel free to find a local electrician in your area using our directory of experienced electrical professionals. Our electricians are fully licensed and pre-screened for your convenience.

Be sure that when you are flipping the circuit breaker on or off, to only use one hand and to be sure and look away from the breaker, reducing your risk to serious injury should the breaker blow.

Steps

  • 1. 1. First, make sure the power to the outlet in question is turned off at the electrical fuse box or cirucuit breaker before any repairs are made. Labeling the breaker with a note indicating that electrical work is being done, will help reduce the risk that someone will accidently turn the power back on while work is being done.

  • 2. Be sure to check the power going to the faulty outlet by either using a circuit tester or other electrical appliance, make sure that the power is off. This can be done by placing the probes of the tester inside the plug, if the light turns on then you need to check you breaker box, until you are positive that no power is going to the outlet.

  • 3. Remove the screws from the cover plate and remove the face plate.

  • 4. Remove the screws from the outlet and take it from the wall. The outlet should only come out a few inches.

  • 5. Mark the wires coming from the outlet by either sing tape or colored markers. The screws and wires are different colors, mark where they are attached.

  • 6. Remove the outlet from the wall by loosening the screws from the outlet.

  • 7. Take the old outlet with you to your local hardware or electrical-supply store. The sales people there will be able to help you locate the correct outlet to replace your faulty outlet, be sure to keep the old outlet as a guide to installing the new outlet.

  • 8. Attach the wires to the new outlet, you can use the marks you made on the faulty outlet as a guide in this process.

  • 9. Make sure that the screws around the wires are tight.

  • 10. Take the outlet and screw it back into the wall.

  • 11. Take the cover plate and screw it back into the wall.

  • 12. Go back the fuse box or circuit breaker and turn all circuits on. Now you can test the circuit for power. If the ciruit still does not work, it is time to contact us, the professionals at CityElectrican.com.

Tips: Overtightening the cover plate may cause it to crack.

Electrical Outlets

Electrical receptacles which have becmoe more commonly known as outlets—, or the place where your lights, computers, microwaves and many other electrical appliances. Some appliances have the half rounded hole for grounding plug on there cords. Many older homes do not have outlets with these grounding holes, in this case you may want to use two prong adapters to ground the appliances in case of a surge.

GFI OutletThe National Electrical Code states that all kitchens, garages, bathrooms, or any area of the house where water is present, use GFI outlets instead of regular outlets for safety reasons. This is done because GFI outlets with shut off a the slightest electrical problem with an outlet that has something plugged into it. This is an essential outlet safety feature, because once you unplug the appliance that caused the problem, you can press "Reset" on the GFI outlet to restore power.
